When Serving Becomes Striving: Breaking Free from People Pleasing as a Christian Woman
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” – Galatians 1:10 (NIV)
Let’s be real.
We say "yes" even when we're exhausted.
We take the call, lead the event, stay late, volunteer again, all in the name of service.
And somewhere in the mix of giving, we start losing ourselves.
For many of us, people-pleasing doesn’t stem from pride. It comes from a deep, holy desire to help, heal, and be a light. But unchecked, that desire can become a prison.
The Heart Behind the Hustle
Christian women are often taught to serve, and rightly so. Jesus calls us to love, to give, to lay down our lives for others. But when our service becomes a compulsion rather than a calling, we cross a dangerous line.
We begin to:
Fear disappointing people more than disappointing God.
Seek validation through our busyness.
Confuse our worth with our work.
It’s subtle, and it’s spiritual.
The Trap of “Yes” Culture
Here’s the truth: Saying “yes” to everyone else while constantly saying “no” to your own emotional needs is not godly humility, it’s silent self-sabotage.
People-pleasing often disguises itself as:
“I don’t want to let anyone down.”
“If I don’t do it, who will?”
“God wants me to be a servant.”
But God never asked you to abandon yourself to keep everyone else comfortable.
Jesus Served, But He Wasn’t a People-Pleaser
Jesus modeled service. But He also modeled boundaries, rest, solitude, and obedience to the Father, not the crowds.
He didn’t heal on command. He didn’t change His message to avoid offense. He didn’t do it all, and He didn’t let guilt drive His decisions.
Why?
Because Jesus didn’t serve to be liked, He served because He was led.
Signs You May Be Struggling with People-Pleasing in the Name of Service
You feel resentful after serving, even though you said “yes.”
You’re exhausted but still feel guilty resting.
You fear saying “no” will make you seem ungrateful, ungodly, or uncaring.
You secretly hope someone will notice your sacrifice, because you feel unseen.
Sound familiar? Sis, you’re not alone. And you’re not weak. You’re just burning out from doing too much in your own strength.
Healing the Root: Approval or Assignment?
Galatians 1:10 hits home: “Am I trying to win the approval of people, or of God?”
If our yes comes from fear instead of faith, we need to pause.
God is not glorified by your exhaustion.
He’s glorified when you walk in your assignment, not when you try to be everything for everyone.
3 Steps to Break Free from People-Pleasing
1. Pause Before You Say Yes
Ask: Is this God’s assignment or my anxiety talking?
Pray for clarity. You are not obligated to carry every need.
2. Reclaim Rest as Worship
Rest isn’t lazy. It’s holy. Jesus rested, and you can too. Burnout doesn’t prove devotion, obedience does.
3. Redefine Your Value
Your worth is not tied to your output. You are loved by God even when you’re not “doing.” He sees you. He cherishes you, right now.
You’re Still Holy When You’re Healing
You can serve without striving.
You can love without losing yourself.
You can be kind without being controlled.
Your “yes” has power, and it’s time to use it prayerfully, not automatically.
Let God be the one you aim to please. His approval is steady, secure, and freeing.
