Spiritual Warfare or Mental Health? How to Know the Difference

As Christian women, we know life gets hard. Between work, family, trauma, and everything in between, stress can pile up fast. But what happens when the pressure feels heavier than normal, like something deeper is attacking your mind, peace, and purpose?

Sometimes, what we call “stress” is actually spiritual warfare. The enemy wants to keep you bound, discouraged, and distant from God. But Sis, we are not powerless. Let’s talk about 5 signs that may point to spiritual warfare, and what to do when you recognize them.

1. You're Mentally Exhausted, but Nothing Has Changed Physically

You’ve rested. You’ve slowed down. But you still wake up weary in your soul. This kind of exhaustion is spiritual, not situational. It may come from unseen battles in the spirit realm, especially if you're walking in purpose or healing.

💡 What to do: Start your day with Scripture and prayer. Try reading Ephesians 6 (the full armor of God) daily. Declare God’s truth out loud.

2. Your Thoughts Are Constantly Negative, Fearful, or Condemning

Are you hearing internal voices saying, "You're not good enough," "God has forgotten you," or "It’s never going to get better"?

That’s not your voice, and it’s definitely not God’s.

The enemy often uses mental attacks to shake our faith and identity.

💡 What to do: Write down those thoughts and compare them to what God actually says. Use Scripture like 2 Corinthians 10:5 “Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.”

3. You Feel Spiritually Numb or Disconnected from God

You try to pray but feel nothing. Worship feels like a chore. Reading your Bible seems impossible. It’s like your connection with God is... gone.

This numbness can be a spiritual attack, especially if it came on suddenly after growth or obedience.

💡 What to do: Don’t isolate. Ask a friend to pray with you. Try soaking in worship music or journaling prayers, even when you don’t “feel” it.

4. You're Facing Unusual Opposition or Chaos

Doors keep closing. Finances dry up. Relationships suddenly fall apart. While life has natural ups and downs, a consistent pattern of destruction and confusion may point to spiritual warfare.

💡 What to do: Pray bold, strategic prayers. Fast if led. Ask the Holy Spirit for discernment, and don’t ignore the red flags.

5. You Feel an Unexplainable Heaviness or Dread

That pit in your stomach. That feeling of doom you can’t shake. That dark cloud over your mind.

This isn’t just anxiety, it could be a spiritual heaviness that needs to be prayed through, not pushed down.

💡 What to do: Invite God into that space. Say out loud, “God, I give you this heaviness. Show me what I need to see.” Rebuke fear and invite the Prince of Peace.

Remember: You’re Not Crazy. You’re in a Battle.

But the good news? You’re not alone and you’re not powerless. Jesus has already won the victory, and He’s given you authority to walk in freedom.

“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10
