Thinking About Therapy? Here’s What Every Christian Woman Should Know
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22 (NIV)
So, you’ve been thinking about trying therapy.
Maybe life has been heavy lately.
Maybe you’ve prayed, cried, journaled, talked to friends, and still feel stuck.
Maybe something deep inside of you is whispering: “It’s time to talk to someone.”
If that’s you, I want you to hear this loud and clear: You are not weak for needing help. You are wise.
Therapy and Faith Can Coexist
There’s a common misconception in the Christian community that therapy means you’re lacking faith, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Choosing therapy is not choosing man over God.
It’s choosing wisdom, healing, and stewardship of your mental and emotional health.
Jesus used people, doctors, counselors, and community, to support others in their healing. Therapy is just one of the many tools God can use to help you grow and overcome.
How Therapy Can Support You
Therapy can help you:
Process past pain without shame
Identify patterns keeping you stuck
Learn healthy boundaries and communication
Manage anxiety, depression, or grief
Reconnect with your God-given identity and purpose
Whether you're navigating trauma, burnout, people-pleasing, or just feeling overwhelmed, therapy creates space to breathe, reflect, and rebuild.
What to Look for in a Christian-Friendly Therapist
If you’re new to therapy, here are some things to consider when finding the right fit for you:
1. Faith-Respecting, Not Faith-Forcing
Look for a therapist who respects your Christian values. They don’t have to be a pastor, but they should honor your worldview.
2. Credentials Matter
Seek someone licensed (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc.) and trained in evidence-based practices like CBT, EMDR, or trauma-informed care.
3. Comfort + Chemistry
You don’t have to feel instant connection, but you should feel safe and heard. The first session is like a first date, it’s okay to explore options.
4. Specializations That Match Your Needs
Struggling with grief? Anxiety? Childhood trauma? Look for a therapist who specializes in what you're walking through.
5. Biblically-Informed (Optional)
You can choose a therapist who explicitly integrates scripture or Christian counseling if you desire a more faith-based approach.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
The first session is usually about:
Learning your history
Exploring why you’re seeking help now
Setting goals
Building comfort
You’re not expected to “spill everything.” You set the pace. You have the right to ask questions, express concerns, and even say, “I’m nervous.”
You Are Not Broken. You Are Becoming.
Therapy is not for the weak, it’s for the brave.
The ones who want to heal, grow, and live fully in the freedom Christ died to give us.
You can have Jesus and a therapist.
You can pray and process.
You can love God and still need support.
God is not intimidated by your pain. He walks with you through it, sometimes through the hands of a trusted counselor.
